Faisal Azam Apu, Special Correspondent: A court has sentenced a woman named Lucky Khatun (23), another neighbor, to death by hanging in a sensational case of murdering two children, 6-year-old Maliha and 7-year-old Sumaiya, in Namoshankarbati Fatehpur Mohalla of Chapainawabganj town, over the greed of a small amount of gold jewelry.
The court also fined him Tk 2 lakh. The other accused in the case, goldsmith Mizanur Rahman Palash (31), son of Rafiqul Islam of Angaria Para in the city, was sentenced to 3 years of rigorous imprisonment for buying stolen gold and country email list 6 months of non-compulsory imprisonment for failing to pay a fine of Tk 10,000.
The deceased children, Maliha, are the daughter of Abdul Malek (34) of the same locality, and Sumaiya, the daughter of Milan Rana (35) of the same locality. Lucky is the wife of Ibrahim Ali of the same locality.
Chapainawabganj Additional District and Sessions Judge Shawkat Ali handed down the sentence in the presence of the accused on Sunday (August 5) afternoon.
According to the case file and public prosecutor Anjuman Ara Begum, on February 12, 2017, Maliha, a play class student of Chhota Moni Vidya Niketan near their home, and Sumaiya, a first class student, went out to play after returning home from school and disappeared around 11 am. Two days later, on the afternoon of February 14, the bodies of the two children were found in two separate bags under the bed in a room of their neighbor Lucky's house. Lucky was arrested on the same day in this incident.
Meanwhile, on February 13, the day after the two children went missing, Maliha's father filed a case under the Women and Children Abuse Act at Sadar Police Station. The case was later converted into a murder case.
