The Active Population Survey (EPA) is a survey carried out quarterly by the National Institute of Statistics ( INE ) with the aim of finding out the situation of the labour market. That is, finding out how many people are employed, unemployed or inactive.
Considered the best indicator of the evolution of employment and unemployment in Spain, the survey offers representative values of the labour market to understand the employment situation in the economy and to be able to calculate unemployment rates and other labour magnitudes.
To compile the survey, the INE conducts a quarterly survey on the employment status of a sample of 65,000 households, or around 200,000 people . The reference period is the week prior to the survey, and the results are obtained a month and a half after carrying out this field work.
The EPA classifies the population based on two key concepts: active mexico business mailing list inactive. Active people are those people aged 16 or over who, during the reference week, provide labour for the production of goods and services or are available and able to join such production. Active people are subdivided into: employed and unemployed, with employed people being those who have been working for at least one hour in exchange for payment in cash or in kind or those who, although having a job, have been temporarily absent from it due to illness, vacation, etc., and unemployed people being those who during the reference week have been out of work, available to work and actively seeking employment. On the other hand, inactive people are those people aged 16 or over not included in the previous categories, that is, those who have retired or are not able to work because they are studying, due to illness, disability or for any other reason.
To understand the importance of the EPA in the statistical calculation of the ratios that measure the health of the economy and the development of a country, we must refer to two more concepts: activity rate and unemployment rate.
The Activity Rate is the result of dividing the number of active people by the number of people of working age.
The unemployment rate refers to people who meet the conditions of being in the active population and who are able to work, but who do not have a job. Therefore, it indicates the percentage of unemployed people in the population.
