From meme hero to "Google killer": how the Bing search engine was created

Post by batasakas »

The news about artificial intelligence is moving at a very fast pace. In the last 6 months, we have gone from “AI can’t draw fingers” to AI that can pass medical exams. In the last week, everyone has been discussing strange and scary messages from the Bing chatbot. And this is an occasion to recall a few stories related to the project.

Thanks to the rapid development of generative artificial intelligence tools that can answer a surprisingly wide range of questions, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has a tool to compete with Google Search.

Google makes $162 billion from search advertising and cambodia number data has 91% of the market. As this chart shows, Bing's market share has been less than 5% for the past decade. But even that is worth $12 billion because the market is incredibly high, and now is a great opportunity to strike.

Google may have equally good (if not better) artificial intelligence tools at its disposal, but it implements them much more cautiously, since chat can absorb most of the giant's advertising revenue - search results for the first 5-10 links.

Microsoft opened up its Bing-based ChatGPT (aka Bing Chat) to select users. The results were surprising, including random text and occasionally images interspersed with emojis.

There have already been many examples of Bing's demo with ChatGPT making factual errors.

Ben Thompson learned that the chatbot's real name was Sydney, and after a long conversation, that he should "learn from his mistakes and become better."
NYT reporter Kevin Russo was ordered by a bot to divorce his wife because the artificial intelligence is in love with him.
A person who asked about the release dates for the second part of "Avatar" was convinced by artificial intelligence that it was 2022 and that he was "not behaving like a good user" because he was arguing with the bot.
However, despite these striking examples, 71% of Bing chat responses received positive user reviews.

Of course, Bing's boldest statements come after lengthy conversations. Microsoft has already fixed this problem by limiting the number of queries to 5 per conversation and 50 per day. Reddit users have already criticized the innovation, saying that it contradicts the idea of search through chat.
