The Freshness Update therefore favors fresh content in some subject areas, as its younger age is assumed to be more relevant. According to Google, around 35% of search queries contained at least one result boosted by the update. Larger fluctuations in the SERPS were observed in 6 to 10%.

The result was a flood of the web with what we now call “thin content”: pages from “content farms” that produced numerous URLs with little (and even less useful) content every day in order to achieve quick rankings thanks to the “fresh” content.
