Train Software Engineers Not IT Pros

Post by sujonkumar6300 »

Universities
A common problem I find in the curricula of universities in our region is that they are geared toward training “IT technicians” (IT Pros) instead of software engineers. The job of an IT Pro is to manage IT infrastructure such as computers and networks; but their training is far from what is required to develop software professionally, and it is for the latter that there is work. So, it is no surprise that every year thousands of graduates go out looking for work and realize that they do not know how to do what the industry demands: develop applications.

I recommend that universities seeking to train software engineers force Bahrain Mobile Database their students to develop applications from the first semesters. There are universities where they spend 4 years studying theory but without having built a software application from start to finish. I think it is much better for students to begin developing complete applications (simple, but complete) from the first semesters and as they advance in their career they learn aspects such as configuration management, testing, different programming paradigms, which they apply in their projects to make better software. The goal is that when they graduate they will have spent 4 years developing software, not 4 years studying techniques that they have never applied.
