It shows that, of all people worldwide who use the internet, half are active on social media, such as Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus and LinkedIn. In addition, the figures show that the audience is getting younger. More than 80 percent of children under the age of two are 'present' online.

For example, 86 percent of American recruiters look at social media to find out more about applicants. Universities also use the web to gather information about potential students who have enrolled. And more than half of American men and 43 percent of women look online for information about their potential dates. In short, consciously or unconsciously we form an online identity, which can have an effect on our 'offline' life.
