For a growing number of organizations, the cloud and cloud storage are the standard option for new IT projects, and even the most cautious companies have adopted “cloud first” or “cloud first” strategies.

This is because startups and fast-growing companies can build infrastructure in the cloud that is difficult to implement quickly in any other way. The push to promote the benefits of cloud technology can even reach those vendors most often associated with on-premises technologies, but the cloud is not always the right choice.

A big appeal of the cloud is its reputation for saving money, but the cloud doesn’t always cut costs. In fact, for some workloads and types of IT operations, the cloud can be more expensive than on-premises systems, traditional data centers, or colocation.

The problem, says John Collins, vice president of research at analyst firm GigaOM, is a lack of forward planning and discipline in the use of cloud resources across the enterprise. “The cloud itself doesn’t save money, but historically it has been perceived and marketed as cheaper,” he says. “This has led to workloads that aren’t quite right for the cloud being moved, incurring migration costs but not the expected benefits. Cloud adoption has driven the growth of cloud applications without prior consideration of the true costs, causing cloud spending to spiral out of control.”
