Docker: The landscape of application development is rapidly changing
17.06.2024
The world of application development has changed significantly in recent years, as new demands and trends reshape the IT landscape. Docker's 2024 State of Application Development Report notes shifts in the industry toward artificial intelligence and microservices, ITPro Today reports.

Docker, the leading provider of cloud-native application development tools, is now in its second year of conducting a comprehensive study that offers an in-depth look at the current software development landscape based on a survey of more than 1,300 respondents.

The report's key findings paint a picture of an industry undergoing significant transformation driven by the rapid adoption of disruptive technologies and evolving development methodologies.

Among the highlights:

Cloud development is on the rise. While 64% of respondents still develop primarily on-premises, 36% are moving to non-local environments such as ephemeral or preview environments, personal remote development environments, and tools like GitHub Codespaces, Gitpod, and Coder.
AI/ML integration is going mainstream. 64% of respondents now use AI tools like ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, and Gemini for tasks like coding, documentation, and research.
Microservices adoption is accelerating. Nearly three times as many respondents are moving from monolithic architectures to microservices than the other way around, indicating a clear bulgaria mobile database more modular and scalable applications.
Security remains a challenge. Despite the industry's focus on early-stage security practices ('shift left'), 34% of respondents rate security challenges as challenging, and 25% are looking for better security tools and vulnerability mitigation.
“Continuously innovating in such a rapidly changing industry is a monumental task,” says Julia Wilson, a UX researcher at Docker and co-author of the report. “The real challenge is helping developers take advantage of the disruptive technologies and tools at their disposal, including cloud development environments, AI, and security tools that make shift left easier to implement.”

For Wilson, the biggest surprise was a number of findings regarding safety.

In particular, a “shift left” in security is indeed happening. This is the concept of security being implemented earlier in the development process rather than later. At the same time, Wilson notes, only 14% of respondents consider the “shift left” in security to be an important trend.
