The term low code is increasingly used in a wide variety of IT areas. But what does it actually mean? Low code is an intuitive, visual approach in modern software development that minimizes the programming effort required and speeds up development. The approach requires little or no programming knowledge and aims to enable all technically minded users to develop their own applications.
The Low-Code Features
The best-known application area of low code is so-called low-code development platforms (LCDPs), such as OutSystems, Mendix, AgilePoint, Microsoft PowerApps, Salesforce or ServiceNow. These offer a toolbox with which developers, but also so-called citizen developers - users with little programming knowledge - can easily create their own applications.
The key tools of low code can be roughly summarized into the following categories:
Low code uses easy-to-use methods, such as graphical modeling of (business) logic, to generate functions for software applications.
Graphical interfaces, process and data models can be created and cayman islands consumer email list configured in a visual form, usually drag-and-drop. The user uses a range of ready-made components, such as UI, process or integration elements, and can create their own application in a modular manner.
A high degree of standardization and reuse of components simplifies and accelerates development. LCDPs usually offer their own marketplace with ready-made modules that can be configured and used.
Modern low-code development platforms are not only provided as on-premises solutions, but increasingly (and preferably) as Platform as a Service (PaaS) or in a hybrid form. This enables secure, preconfigured and monitored deployment. Ideally, even one-click deployment of the created application is possible.
Citizen Developer Framework – or what can be achieved through the low-code approach
The term citizen developers describes employees outside of IT departments who are empowered to develop software independently with the help of low-code platforms. Software development with low code requires little to no experience in software development.
