Want to accept the reality that CPL is getting more expensive,

When we know what the matrix is, then we know if the advertisement is actually in a "healthy" or "sick" state. And when talking about this matrix, it depends on what kind of advertisement we are running. Where do we advertise? Google? Facebook? TikTok? What is the objective of creating advertisements? Conversion? Traffic? Lead generation? Where will our advertisement take us? Website? Shopee? Team sales? Why do we need to know all this? Because all of the above will have different matrices for us to measure ad performance.
