You also have to have someone to love. And that, again, in the book Ikigai , they talk about it, or Ikigai, I don't really know how to pronounce it, they talk about it. Those who live a long time have friends, family, people they see every day. Social, we know that it is very very important for our species. We know that spending time with people we love releases happiness hormones. We also talked about it in a video by Français Authentique in which I reviewed a book on happiness hormones. So yes, spending time with people we love and having fun with them releases oxytocin, which is a hormone that makes us happy. So having someone to love, whether it's your family, your wife, your children, your husband, your parents or your friends, well that contributes to our happiness.
And finally, what is very very important to have is something to hope for, very important, to have something to hope for. Here, we are not only in daily action. When I took the example of cooking earlier, well there you go, we cook, it's for today, it's not a long-term project. Having something to hope for, these are long-term projects, actions that we will put in place today but to have a result later, what we call deferred gratification. And it seems that this is possible at any age.
Obviously, the older we get, the harder it is to have things to hope for. But we can very well, in our old age, when we are an elderly person, we can very well have as a thing to hope for well that saudi arabia whatsapp number data our transmission, that everything that we will transmit to our children, to our family, when we are going to disappear, will be substantial. We can think about the contribution that we will make after our death to the community, to the collectivity. So there are, at any age, I think, things to hope for.
And it's also one of the bases of happiness in fact, because if you don't hope for anything, you can have people close to you, you can be busy, you will lack meaning in the end. We all need to have meaning, we could define it like that, the meaning that we give to our life. And if we lack meaning, we can't be happy. It was also a part of the book Ikigai . So it was fun to see that finally the wisdom of centenarians, the wisdom of old people, who have lived a very long time, we find it in books but also in really nice quotes.
So I remind you of this quote: "Happiness is having something to do, someone to love, and something to hope for." And I really invite you to review this quote regularly, to ask yourself right now: "Do I have something to do? Do I have someone to love? Do I have something to hope for?" And if you answer "no" to one of these three questions or more, you will know where to look, where to work. If you have no one to love, look for someone to love. If you have nothing to do today, look for a hobby, an occupation. If you have nothing to hope for, it will take a little more time, but think about it, start this work to really move forward slowly but surely towards the path to happiness. This is what I recommend you do.
And if you ever have all three… I have to say that’s my case, I’m very lucky, I have all three, I have things to do. Sometimes I feel like I have too many things to do. I have people to love, obviously, my family, my friends, I have a lot of people to love. I was also thinking about the members of the Académie Français Authentique. So I have people to love. And I also have things to hope for. I have lots of plans for myself, for Français Authentique, for my wife, for my children, for my grandchildren when they’re here. So I have a lot to hope for too and I feel a lot of gratitude for having these three things. And I really invite you, if you have these three things, to feel gratitude, because ultimately you don’t need much else to be happy.
Thank you for following this episode. Don't forget to go take a look in the description, the first link that will take you to the academy's presentation page .
