SMEs plan to invest in data and information

The year 2020/21 will see a rise in technology-driven businesses as more and more companies embark on the path of digital transformation. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) will usher in a new way of doing business and traditional business processes will soon cease to exist.
New technologies and their impact on businesses are changing at a rapid pace. These changes are offering small businesses a host of new and inspiring opportunities. But this change is also putting constant pressure on small business leaders to keep up.
We wanted to know how technology leaders in small businesses are changing their approach to technology investments with the rapid pace of technology change. To answer this question, we present the results of the Gartner primary study on technology trends in German SMEs and derive the most important trends for 2020 and 2021.

Strategic Technology Planning
Over 3/4 of German companies consider technology trends to be an important factor in their strategic planning. Of these, 56% see technology trends as an important factor and in 17% of SMEs, technology drives strategic planning. In 22% of SMEs, technology trends are not a decisive factor or are not taken into account.
Tech Trends in German SMEs
Financing and accounting software (75%), data and information security (75%) and project management software (55%) are the most commonly used technologies in German SMEs. They are also the technologies with the highest realized benefits to date.
The technologies that most German SMEs plan to use in 2020/21 are AI/ML (29%), business intelligence and analytics (29%) and mobile business applications (28%). The technologies with the greatest impact for 2020/21 are conversational user interfaces, business intelligence and analytics and IoT.
Planned technology budgets
Data and information security (47%), cloud computing (41%) and digital marketing (39%) are the technologies with the highest planned budget for 2020/21.
