Why are adverbs so bad?

Stephen King has a clear opinion on adverbs: “The road to hell is paved with adverbs.”


Because they are superfluous. Or, to put it more precisely: in a good text, they are superfluous.

Example with adverb:
“He closed the door tightly.”

Better:
“He slammed the door.”

Shorter, crisper, livelier.
