Nearly three years after working from home became the norm, video calls can still be awkward: Where do you have to look? At the camera to simulate eye contact, even though you're just staring at a black dot? Or at the people on the screen, causing your gaze to drop? Zoom has found a solution and has already filed a patent application.

These and other ideas are in the review of patent estonia number data applications from technology giants.

Amazon: wants to know where it hurts
The online retail giant has filed a patent application for telemedicine technology that will allow doctors to receive more informative photos of patients' illnesses.

Essentially, patients will receive automated instructions on what and how to take pictures, and then send the images to a doctor for analysis. For example, if a doctor needs to look at the back of the throat, Amazon's system will provide patients with sample photos and provide audio instructions on what angle to take the picture from.

“Current telemedicine systems provide limited feedback to the patient taking the image. This degrades the user experience for both the patient and the physician and can potentially lead to misdiagnoses and other errors,” the patent application states.

Scheme: U.S. Patent and Trademark Office

Amazon has rapidly expanded its presence in healthcare over the past few years. In late 2019, the company launched Amazon Care, its own service offering in-person doctor visits, followed by the launch of Amazon Pharmacy in late 2020.

Despite the closure of the Amazon Care project in August, the deal to buy One Medical for $3.9 billion will make up for it if regulatory hurdles can be overcome: the primary care provider has more than 750,000 customers.
