It was supposed to be beautiful - after your course, the doors of the best companies were supposed to be open to you, and employers were supposed to compete in offering the best employment conditions.

Okay, let's start from the beginning: why are employers more likely to hire experienced people than fresh college graduates?

Is it about industry knowledge and the ability to use it in practice? Proven competences? The ability to function in a team and in the organization of work? Skills related to time management and task implementation?

Bingo! For the employer, all of this matters. What counts is the results of your work – it doesn’t matter how extensive your knowledge is if you can’t put it into practice or simply don’t do your job.

But hey, you have knowledge about the industry (because you're interested in it!) that you'd like to test in practice, the necessary skills (something was pushing you during those studies...) and you can function in a team - after all, you have experience in volunteering and student organizations. And you've completed more than one project!

The problem is that the employer doesn't know about it. How to change that? Make sure that your CV says: "you can rest assured, I'm the right person!"

Are you able to translate knowledge from your studies into practice? Are you able to work in a team and communicate easily? Are you a conscientious person who sees things through to the end? Great! What experiences can confirm this?

Create a strong CV, and if you don't have anything to put on it yet, take a step back and get the practice you need!

The right attitude
Change your mindset – right out of college you are not an expert yet and your contribution to the team will initially be small – you will most likely just learn. And that is okay!

Don't demand from the beginning a salary comparable to the salary of experienced specialists, just as you are not required to have comparable responsibility or such great experience (unless it is otherwise!

Show a positive attitude when it comes to the tasks assigned to you, even if they are not very ambitious at first. Everything will come with time! At most, you will give up later, and in the meantime, you will absorb new knowledge and observe experienced practitioners at work .

When entering the market, look primarily for opportunities to gain valuable experience and acquire industry know-how. This is the best investment at the beginning of the journey and the best way to create a strong foundation of professional competence!
